In the Evening

In the evening as the sun cools and dips behind the surrounding hills, the golden light falling across the fields drags the shadows downwards,  the cut crops poke like staw spikes from the soil. The encroaching dust highlights the hillside town of Campiglia Marittima, as the colours drain and merge from the landscape, the town appears to recede into the hillside. The air still feels warm from the days searing heat but is beginning to cool as the shadows lengthen. So close to the coast the weather can change with the tides but very little rain will fall over the summer months.  As the sunlight fades from the sky,  the wind picks up from the coast blowing freely across the flat plains of the Cornia basin and on up into the the winding streets of the hillside town. The crickets stop their incessant chirping as the sun finally drops from view and the summer evening is quiet as the wind suddenly stops.
