Friday street market
Every Friday the street market in Follonica an Italian town on the west coast of Tuscany, takes place opposite the main railway station. The market stalls are packed in place along the main street and extend back into the public gardens behind. After fighting for a parking space we take a wander through the street market. The heat of the sun means we duck and dive between the shade of the overhanging stalls, straining to see the market wares laid out under the canopies. The market is always busy with tourists and local shoppers, many of the stalls sell the same goods from plastic toys, mens shoes, casual clothes and short trousers or for the women, dresses, shoes, hanging curtains and shawls as well as leather bags and belts, strange knives, cutlery and plates. The place is packed with people !
We battle to the rear of the market where there is an open food market, stocked with colourful fruit and vegetable as well as cheese and salami stalls. The shouts of the market sellers across the market attract the attention of the passing customers, each competing with the neighbouring stall, the atmosphere is colourful and humourous. We barter for some dried fruit and olives and choose some Pecorino to take with us to the beach, we battle back to the find the car and try to escape the madness.
