A Sunday in Siena
The sun beats down on our backs as we climb the hill to the walled entrance gates of the city of Siena. Sticking to the shade at the side of the cobbled streets leading up to the middle of the city, the tall buildings and narrow streets offer protection from the full glare of the sun, we wander through the back streets on the way to the centre of the city. All roads lead to the Duomo with every street corner offering a glimpse of the square in front of the Cathedral. Tourists are lined up along the walls of the University opposite the main entrance, seated in the shade, this offers people the chance by craning their necks to take in the grand frontage of the cathedral, the sun reflects off the white marble walls, it’s blinding on the eyes and difficult to capture the whole building in the viewfinder.
Piazza del Campo
Steep steps lead down to the rear of the Cathedral pass the lower crypt entrance and lower square, we wander through the alleyways towards the Piazza del Campo. Time to find a bar on the square, somewhere out of the intense sunshine, moving back into the shade we take in the views and people watch for a while.
