Lake Pukatiki

Round trip from Oamaru to Timaru via the lakes, Lake Pukatiki first with its crystal glacier blue water, stopped at the iSite with a view over the lake towards Mt. Cook. Have to wait for over an hour for the clouds to clear the view down to the mountains, the peak of Mt. Cook finally emerges… just. Follow a twisting route over to Lake Tekapo, lupins line the roadside and hills, centre of Tekapo quite developed and commercial, views onto the lake however are stunning, visit the church of the Good Shepherd, disappointing in some respects with so many tourist in the car park and posing at the entrance, on the south side an large modern window opens up a framed view of the lake from inside the chapel. Head towards the coast and Timaru through a large stretch of desert plane to the east of the mountain range. In Timaru we wander to find a good bar and food at Speight brewery in the middle of town after walking in from the camp site, stop at the dome to see the end of a country and western performance, then witness Miss Younger Timaru contest ! girls aged 12 and 13 in swim suites….all very odd. 30.12.2013

New Years Eve

Travel around to the north of Christchurch, missing the city along the scenic route 74, takes in the mountains range surrounding Mt.Hutt, detour to the skiing village of Methven. Blue Pub opposite the Brown Pub, favorite places for the film crew of LOTR. Have a cool muffin in an unfriendly cafe, views of Mt Cook in the distance, pass through Sheffield and visit Oxford, with its jail house public stocks and bakery store. Campsite by the beach after stopping in Rangiora for supplies. Woodend Beach, bit run down but close walk through the wood to the beach, some surfers but generally empty, long walk and a think about the past year. Welcome in 2014 down by the beach, fantastic array of stars, most of the galaxy is visible, too dark on the beach head back to the camp. No fireworks tonight because of the fire risk ban. 31.12.2013

 Kiakoura

Travel north along the Alpine Pacific Triangle Tourist Route, over rolling hills, find a few places to stop for photos. Stop at a cool cafe for a snack in the garden in Cheviot, good food, and look at the black carved stone necklaces and artwork. Come down from the hills to Goose Bay, stop at a couple of coves for some photos and views, Sea lions on the rocks, view of Kaikoura coming round the bend. Camp at Top 10, just a short walk into town, for T-shirts and beer…cool views of the bay and the surrounding mountain range, dark stony beach washed by waves crashing on the beach. Stunning scenery. 01.01.2014
