Leaving the South Island
Stormy windy weather on the way, time to head north for the ferry in Picton.
Heavy cross wind during the first part of the journey along the coast, stopping to look down at a cluster of seals, living in one of the bays. Restock in Blenheim, then up to Picton and a wait for the ferry, this time parking indoors with the camper van but told to turn round and reverse into a tight corner. Getting better at this….
Normal night ferry so little room, full of screaming kids, crossing relatively smooth though. Bit of a rethink required on the timing and use of the ferry…. next time in Australia.
Quickly ashore then under an hours drive to revisit our free camping beach at Waikanae Beach, bracing walk to the beach to see the crashing surf, head the camper into the wind this time and hope for a calmer night. Fri. 03.Jan
Heading North towards Hawke`s Bay, over the blustery hills, stop in Woodville for a snack and a visit to a strange antique store containing old world relic’s people have emigrated with. Onwards through the numerous wine orchards to Napier. After finding the one campsite in Napier we stroll into the town centre, all of the centre is in the Art Deco style which was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1931.Sit on the beach a while before going to the Lone Star Bar for a drink and meal. Talk of Clint Eastwood films and Wanderin Star…good night in a cool town. Sat.04.Jan
