Jump in the car, put the soft top down, set the gauges for the hills and turn south for the mountains. Sometimes it’s just great to take the time to get out of the house, wandering around wondering what to do, grab the camera pick up the car keys ! I am always surprised how easy it is to reach some beautiful place within ten or twenty minutes.
Sylvensteinsee is just down the road heading south in the direction of Austria. One of my favourite places to stop is on the bridge spanning the dam. In both directions the mountains drop down to the lakeside, its waters turquoise in colour. The clouds today are clinging to the peaks as the last days of winter hold on to the mountains.
We travel further towards Hinteriß on the Rißtal an enclosed valley road that heads up along the river into Austria, the road finishes in Eng a small hamlet at the head of the valley. It’s still early in the season so we stop just after Hinteriß and wander down to the water’s edge. The mountainous jagged barrier to Austria at the head of the valley is visible, still snow-covered in the distance. We sit by the mountain stream and watch the river flow, it reminds me of another moment long ago and the folk song Leaf and Stream.
