Kirchsee is a moor lake between Holzkirchen and Bad Tölz to the south of Munich, it is a popular bathing area because of its excellent water quality and the fantastic panoramic views it affords to the distant Southern Alps. In winter the shallow waters (only 16m in-depth) often means the surface is frozen over by ice. Today though the winter seems a long way off, as the sky is clear and the view uninterrupted down to the distant forms of the mountain ranges.
I take a wander around the northern shore, the waters are so clear and still today, on the weekend this place would be full of swimmers, but at the moment it’s a chance to photograph the quiet stillness and capture the contemplative atmosphere.
End of the Pier
The place is deserted, so it is a good chance to take a number of photographs of the pier disappearing classically into the lake with the background form of the Alps in the distance.
Into the depths
At the end of the pier steps lead temptingly down into the dark blue and orange waters.
